summary of the research papers related to the project idea

When conducting the surveys on the literature reviews regarding our project idea, we found several researches conducted by scientists of foreign countries. Through this article I summarize some of the articles that our group members found out regarding the project idea.

They have used different methods when developing the device to translate braille characters to texts or vice versa. And also the main purpose of the development process is the cost effectiveness of the product which can be easily used by visually impaired people.

A survey has conducted by the scientists Mr. Vrushabh S. Dharme and Mrs. S. P. Karmore regarding the same issue identified related to visually impaired people, to produce an English text to Braille conversion system. They have found that in producing the Braille Display, the most efficient hardware parts are using microcontrollers instead of using FPGAs. The reason is the cost-effectiveness of microcontrollers rather than using FPGA for large scale quantity productions. Moreover, the micro-controllers are power-efficient. The methodology that they are using is capturing the image of English text and converting it into relative Braille character using automated Thresholding Algorithm.  Click below to read the abstract.

This same purpose of cost-effectiveness has been considered by Mr. Madaeon in project on producing a Low-cost Braille Electronic Display. In this display, for representing a single Braille character the producer has used magnets to push the dots up on the surface. The reason for using the magnets is the cost-effectiveness of them for such a project. The body of this device is 3D printed.

When we go through the research papers, one thing that we noted is several researches are based on Image processing techniques. They have captured the image of the particular text and through Image processing techniques, text has been converted. An example for such a project is Development of a Text to Braille Interpreter for printed Documents through Optical Image Processing. The camera captures the image in tiff format and they are analyzed through optical image processing. The digitized text are then transferred electronically in a braille haptic device which is composed of several haptic pins arranged in a way to resemble the braille writing system. The analyzed data are sent to the microcontrollers and hence to the refreshable Braille cells. Those Braille dots move up or down with the use of piezoelectric technology.  To read the abstract, click below.
